Nintendo president Satoru Iwata and his team have spoken about penis detection in the highly moderated Miiverse. Wii U Miiverse social network director Yoshiomi Kurisu has revealed that it was a complex issue that inevitably needed solving. Here’s how they went about it.
Iwata: I agree. The unique feature of the Miiverse is being able to send drawings, not just text. But since the advent of the internet, there have always been those who have used it for unsavory purposes.
Kurisu: Right, auto-detection of bad words is very simple.
Iwata: Yes, text messages may be easy to moderate; however, drawings are much more difficult.
Yuzawa: (laughs) I think I know where this is going.
Kurisu: Let us get this out of the way then. (laughs) We anticipated that some users would draw…
Kato: Can we even say the word?
Iwata: Go ahead. (laughs)
Kurisu: Ahem, uh. Some users would take to drawing penises.
Kurisu: Well, it’s true. It seems to be more of a phenomenon found in the west.
Motoyama: Yes, we never had such a problem with our Hatena services. But, when we brought Hatena Flipnote to the West, we were caught off-guard by the amount of penises drawn by people.
Kurisu: So the team and I had to come up with a way to create a system that auto-detects those types of pictures.
Kato: Kurisu-san suggested we study different types of penises in order to create figure out the relative shape and size people would draw. We spent a week doing that before we realized that we should have been looking at drawings of penises rather than real-life pictures. (laughs) We were very embarrassed about that.
Kurisu: My judgement on these types of situations is poor. (laughs)
Motoyama: After a week, we made very good progress on the system. Then we tested the system with Nintendo of America and told them to start drawing. It went horribly.
Kurisu: What we learned is that people enjoy drawing penises. Multiple ones. (laughs) The system was not prepared to handle that.
Iwata: I do not think your team anticipated how difficult this would get!
Kurisu: No. (laughs)
Yuzawa: I was disheartened myself. We spent a few more weeks trying to get a system working.
Motoyama: Nintendo of America really took the system to its limits.
Yuzawa: You know what surprised me. No one drew a single vagina.
Iwata: So, in the end, it all worked out?
Kurisu: Yes, we can safely say that we have a very good system to detect penis drawings. Hopefully player’s Miiverse experiences will be a fun one!

As usually I buy games every know and then. This week I ended up buying the remake of Jet Set Radio for XBLA (thats the reference for Professor K). I have it both for the Dreamcast and Xbox from before, but I always wanted an HD-version and a more convenient way to play it. Plus I wanted to support the games I like. So if it’s coming in a hard cover for the PS Vita I’m probably buying it even thought I don’t have a Vita (yet). So, back to the game. For me it wasn’t a good port, the sound was a bit laggy and strange. And after a bit googling I read that there where other that was experiencing the same problem, but sadly no solution. They where guessing it was a hardware problem. Other then that it looked ok, some of the textures was the same, so not the complete makeover it could have been. Guess that would cost Sega to much.
I’ve also got my hands on some Nintendo DS games. Of course the new Pokemon White 2 (not that I have the time to play it), and finally New Super Mario Bros. Which is not really a game I enjoy that much, but I feel that a proper collection should have at least most of the Mario games. And last but not least I’ve finally got not just one, but two Professor Layton games! Last Specter and Unwound Future. Just need to plan some time to play them. I do really like puzzles of the type that are in the Layton series.
Not sure if you have played this awesome Gamecube game, but this commercial hits the game on the spot!
A friend of mine tweeted this funny way to represent the different Game Boy’s and DS’s.

A few days ago a friend of mine told me he was going to be wearing a Mario costume today to promote the new Mario game, New Super Mario Bros. Wii. So I had to visit the store. Sadly when I arrived I wasn’t wearing it because it was to hot and too few kids for him to take the trouble of putting it on. It was in fact zero kids. I was the only one there. There had been some people a bit earlier, but not much. “Anywho”, I of course had to try the game when I was first down there, and it was fun. I’m not much of a Mario fan, but when I could play it with other people it became more interesting. Not that interesting that I’m going to buy a Wii. One of the plus is all the cute outfit you can get by eating different mushrooms, flowers and so on. Sadly there are no way to get super big as you could in the DS version, but you can get small and run on the water. So if you into Mario and have a Wii, I can recommend it. Not for the story mode, but for the fun it is to play with your friend!
PS: There will maybe be some blog post about my trip in Africa later today!
There was more awesome games that where told about yesterday! So I thought about making another post about it. Hopefully I’ll get around to post about me soon. Just need some time to relax first. PS: Have some cool news about me too!
“Anywho”, here are the videos! Enjoy!
It looks like a fun game, and I love the DS engine!
